Orthodontic plates, which are very common and custom-made, are suitable for correcting the position and bite of teeth in children and adolescents. Dental plates straighten crooked teeth, prevent jaw deformity and facial asymmetry, and allow you to enjoy a beautiful smile at an early age.
Wearing a dental plate is usually recommended for children aged 8 to 13 years old, when they are particularly active in their growth and facial changes. Removable dental plates are used for the expansion of the jaws (especially the upper jaw), for the formation of the permanent teeth and for the final stage of orthodontics – retention – when the teeth are to be kept in their new position.
The base of the custom-made dental plates is a special plastic. In the mouth, these teeth straighteners are fixed to the teeth on the palate side by hooks, which have a number of additional elements to move the teeth: screws and springs to adjust the tension. The screws help to create space for the teeth. The dental plate is easy to remove when needed.
However, during the adaptation period, wearing a dental plate can cause some discomfort: at the very beginning of the wearing process, the patient’s speech and swallowing are impaired, and not all dental movements are easy to perform. It is also very important to wear these systems as often as possible, otherwise a pleasing result will not be achieved quickly or the orthodontic treatment will have no effect at all.
The plates are used to straighten teeth in children, but they can also be used in adolescents for minor corrections to the position of teeth. Adults do not straighten their teeth with these appliances. It is advisable for the patient to wear the dental plate not only at night, but to try to wear it for about 14-20 hours a day.
Plate care: the plate must be removed before each cleaning. Teeth are cleaned as normal and plates are cleaned separately, either by rinsing them under water with a stiff brush or by soaking them in a specially adapted preparation.
