Today, this is also a very pressing concern for everyone. Crooked teeth often prevent a person from smiling broadly and freely – he often covers his smile with his hand. All this reduces a person’s self-confidence and causes psychological problems. This can be solved by a quick straightening of the teeth with orthodontic appliances, in other words, orthodontic treatment or, for short, orthodontics.

Teeth straightening is a procedure that restores the appearance of an aesthetically pleasing smile and prevents tooth wear and tear, increased tooth decay, premature tooth loss and future jaw problems.

Orthodontics is a branch of aesthetic medicine that corrects malocclusion and malocclusion by ensuring that the jaw grows smoothly and the position of the teeth, and if necessary, diagonalizing, correcting or otherwise preventing malocclusion or malposition. Orthodontic treatment is essentially a dental straightening procedure, where patients’ misaligned teeth are corrected with orthodontic appliances that allow the desired result to be achieved quickly. Orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, but also reduces the likelihood of dental disease and facilitates physical processes such as chewing and speaking.

Orthodontic treatment requires a lot of time and energy on the part of the patient, and orthodontic problems are not always easily solved. Minor misalignments can be treated with a quick straightening of the teeth, but the majority of all cases require both more time wearing orthodontic appliances and more time looking after the teeth while wearing them and visiting the orthodontist. However, avoiding going to the orthodontist or simply accepting crooked teeth is not an option, and orthodontic problems need to be addressed, because over time, bite defects start to progress, teeth become more worn down, there is a risk of tooth decay or gum disease, and there can be serious problems with the temporomandibular joint and chewing, and even changes in the profile of the face.

Teeth straightening dates back to 1000 years B.C. Etruscans and Greeks are thought to have made first primitive orthodontic appliances. Rapid development of dentistry began in the 18th-19th century. It was at that time, when most of the orthodontic appliances were invented. Edward H. Angle and Norman W. Kingsley are considered to be the fathers of contemporary orthodontics. USA started preparing orthodontists at the beginning of the 20th century, however, in Lithuania first orthodontist graduated only in the end of the 20th century.
