Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures. Teeth whitening is the easiest way to improve your smile.

"Whitening" is any process that will make teeth appear whiter. This can be achieved in two ways. A product can bleach the tooth, which means that it actually changes the natural tooth color. Bleaching products contain peroxide(s) that help remove deep (intrinsic) and surface (extrinsic) stains. By contrast, non-bleaching whitening products contain agents that work by physical or chemical action to help remove surface stains only.

Whitening products may be administered by dentists in the dental office, dispensed by dentists for home-use, or purchased over-the-counter (OTC), and can be categorized into two major groups:

  • Peroxide-containing bleaching agents; and
  • Whitening toothpastes (dentifrices)

We offer professional teeth bleaching at our dental clinic “Pilėnė“ in Vilnius.

Teeth bleaching is not a new procedure. Hydrogen peroxide was found to be used for teeth bleaching more than a hundred years ago. Scientifically teeth bleaching using hydrogen peroxide was first proposed by Westlake, American Journal of Dental Science, 1895, USA.

Many different materials have been used for teeth bleaching, but so far nothing better was discovered than the good old hydrogen or carbamide peroxide (weaker form of hydrogen peroxide). All modern bleaching methods are based on the use of the same substance, just of different strains and concentrations. Many researches carried out in various countries confirm that teeth bleaching using hydrogen peroxide is safe, does not alter the structure of teeth and surrounding tissues. There are a lot of myths about the harm of teeth bleaching. They are untrue, however. Even on the contrary – it is the safest cosmetic dental procedure. Of course, it must be carried out in accordance with the rules and conditions. Every patient should be examined by a dental specialist prior to the procedure. Today, 92% of dental patients in USA get their teeth bleached.

Teeth bleaching ways:

  • Bleaching trays (at home)
  • Laser bleaching (in-office)

Laser bleaching and bleaching trays are equally effective, but bleaching trays require more effort and patience, while laser bleaching is done only in one visit. However, in-office laser bleaching is twice as expensive as bleaching trays.

Smoking, coffee, tea, red wine and various coloring foods will eventually reduce the bleaching effect. Therefore, after the laser bleaching procedure, trays are made to support the obtained color. 3 hours of bleaching trays every 6 months is enough to enjoy a WONDERFULLY WHITE SMILE.

There are other teeth whitening methods – special strips, varnishes, whitening toothpastes etc., but they are less effective. Both whitening toothpaste and professional oral hygiene remove plaque from the teeth surface and consequently improve the looks. However, to change the tooth color itself, tooth must be bleached chemically.

Usually peroxide effectively bleaches the teeth. However, there are not any miraculous ways that would guarantee a snow-white smile. Teeth bleaching effect is always individual. It depends on the structure of the tooth, thickness of the enamel, pigment type. In some cases, teeth can be highly resistant to bleaching.

Worn enamel and periodontitis (gum inflammation) are contraindications of teeth bleaching. It is also recommended to postpone the procedure for pregnant, lactating women, persons under 18 years of age. It must be taken into consideration that fillings and other dental restorations do not bleach, therefore, changes and adjustments may be necessary after the bleaching.
