What is an onlay?

Molars experience heavy masticatory loads when chewing. When more than half of the tooth crown is damaged, especially if the fault involves interproximal areas, it is recommended to get tooth restored with porcelain (ceramic) onlays. Compared with the filling material, porcelain is enhanced (has strength equal to the tooth enamel), fully withstanding masticatory loads and making tooth walls less prone to fracture. No additional preparation is required for onlays, remaining tooth tissues are saved, tooth is restored esthetically.
