Dentistry for children

Oral care should begin soon after birth. Gums should be cleaned after each feeding. When first children's frontal teeth appear, they should be wiped with a clean, damp cloth or gauze pad. You should begin to use toothbrush, as soon as your child's back teeth appear at age of about 1 year. Parents should brush children's teeth daily with a soft wet toothbrush and a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Schedule a dental visit between 12-18 months age. When children are very young it is necessary to supervise their brushing to ensure proper brushing habits are adopted.

To prevent your child suffering from nursing bottle mouth, you mustn't give your baby a bottle with milk, formula or juice at a nap or bed time. Fill the bottle with plain water.

Permanent teeth start to come through around the age of six. This begins with the first molars and lower central incisors. As soon as back permanent teeth erupt, we recomend to cover them with dental sealants. They can provide a further layer of protection against cavities. They are plastic coatings which are painted onto the the grooved chewing surfaces at the back of teeth.

The total prevention of caries and other oral diseases is the ultimate goal of dentistry. Meanwhile, procedures must be utilized to preserve the primary teeth ravaged by caries. The opinion, that it doesn't make sense to treat primary teeth because they are going to come out, is wrong. Not treated tooth may lead to pain and infection. Bacteria can affect the erupting permanent tooth. Early loss of primary teeth can cause drift of permanent teeth and consequent malocclusion. Other objectives of preserving primary teeth are to aid in esthetics, speech, mastication and to prevent the psychologic effects associated with untimely tooth loss. There are colorful fillings for primary teeth, which children like very much.
